Research and Teaching
There a number of research and teaching institutes in development studies in Spain.
- The ICEI – Instituto Complutense de Estudios Internacionales (Complutense Institute of International Studies) – works on issues of aid management, aid effectiveness, international economy, multilateralism and humanitarian issues. José Antonio Alonso has written on aid effectiveness and the theoretical underpinnings of ‘development’. Jose Antonio Sanahuja has published an article on the Reform of the Spanish Aid system. Recently the ICEI has contributed to analysing the role of aid in middle income countries.
- HEGOA –Instituto de Estudios sobre Desarrollo y Cooperación Internacional (Institute for Development Studies and International Cooperation) – University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) works on issues of Local Human Development and Human Security. HEGOA’s team has published the Dictionary on Humanitarian Action and Development Aid and is now developing a resource gateway on human development, global education and citizen participation.
- CIDOB Foundation (www.cidob.org) works on International Relations and Development Studies. Enric Royo has written a report on the monitoring of Spanish Official Development Assistance (ODA) on population and reproductive health, see www.cidob.org. Anna Ayuso has coordinated an issue of Afers Internacionals on the challenges of development organisations and their professionals in a globalised world. CIDOB organises annually the seminar Latin American Development Agenda.
- Real Instituto Elcano – a semi-independent research centre – works generally on International Relations and has a department on International Cooperation mainly on economic issues. Iliana Olivié has recently published a report on coherence within the Spanish Government.
- The Institute of Studies on Conflicts and Humanitarian Action (IECAH) is a private initiative based in Madrid dedicated to the study of conflicts, global trends, humanitarian aid and development cooperation. IECAH’s mission is to contribute to the growth and consolidation of civil responses towards humanitarian crises.
- CeALCI is a semi-independent research unit within the Fundación Carolina. The work areas are, amongst others, regional integration and social cohesion.
- Escuela Superior de Técnica Empresarial de Agrícola (Techncial School of Agricultural Business, ETEA) – based in Cordoba, is a Jesuit research and teaching institute working on development, it has a special focus on education policies.
- The Institute for Social development and Peace (I+D+P Instituto De Desarrollo Social y Paz), based in Alicante, it works on issues of peace and poverty reduction.
- The Institute for Regional Development (IDR), based in Seville, works on evaluation of public policies.
- El Instituto Universitario de Desarrollo y Cooperación de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (The Development and Cooperation Institute of the Complutense Univeristy of Madrid, IUDC), works on various development issues and teaches development studies.
- The Instituto Galego de Análise e Documentación Internacional (The Galician Institute of Analysis and International Documents, IGADI), works on International Relations and Development. It is closely linked to Galician development Policy and has a special focus on Asia.
- FRIDE, www.fride.org,
works on issues of democratisation, peace & security, human rights
and humanitarian action and development. Pierre Schori has written on
European
policy towards the Middle East. Richard Youngs recently edited the
Survey
of European Democracy Promotion Policies. Mariano Aguirre has written
on the Crisis
of the State and Civil Domains in Africa.
Susanne Gratius has analysed Brazil as Regional peace broker .
